Tips for enjoying a Multi-Generational break
More families than ever are choosing to holiday with grandparents, taking advantage of being able to spend more quality time together while sharing the cost of a break.
Multi-Generational Breaks
Bluestone has seen a steady increase in the number of bookings taken from multi-generational families since its opening 10 years ago - with our larger lodges perfect for the occasion!
A recent poll found 20 percent of UK families are already holidaying regularly with grandparents, parents, and children - unsurprising given the neutral ground of a holiday means it’s a great way to step off the treadmill and spend time together.
The combination of roomy self-catering lodges, Free-Range fun with no tight schedules to keep to and a wide range of activities that can suit all ages (even if you’re just watching) makes it an ideal spot for a three-generation trip.
Tips For A Great Bluestone Stay:
Here’s our guide to taking your grandparents on holiday to Bluestone:
Pick The Right Lodge
Have a think about what suits you best - interconnecting rooms? One big space? There’s plenty of choice on our accommodation page. If there’s six of you, then consider a Skomer lodge - which has a bit more space and a ‘cwtch’ area for the kids to hide away in while dinner’s being cooked.
If you’re looking for a bit more privacy, then our connected Cadley lodges offer just that - open the connected door to make it one big lodge when you’re sharing the family fun, and two when the grandparents need 10 minutes of peace and quiet!
If there’s a few more of you, our St David’s and Grassholm lodges both sleep up to eight people.
Book A Buggy
There’s lots to explore at Bluestone and chances are somewhere along the way little feet will begin to tire out, and the grandparents will probably appreciate a break. So pop them on the back on a buggy and continue your adventure.
There’s lot to find at Bluestone, and our buggies are great, fun way to get around - not to mention a hit with children. They’re a novelty and the little ones love cruising around the resort on them.
Relax Your Routine
We decided long ago that our Free Range ethos should flow through everything we do. We don’t put any stress on you - there are plenty of activities you can sign up to but we don’t want to put schedules at the heart of your holiday.
Being flexible is key to a stress-free holiday with grandparents. For starters, you’ll need to relax daily routines, allowing longer for everyone to get ready for a day out.
Are Granny and Grandpa all-action grandparents, keen to be involved in daily activities? Or are they content to sit back, watch and do very little? If you’re with grandparents, considering the needs of a wide range of ages can be a challenge.
The Bluestone resort makes figuring this out much simpler and grandparents can join in as much, or little as they like. You’re all staying under one roof - go off in your different directions knowing your temporary home isn’t far away. And you’ll be surprised how fulfilling a lazy afternoon at the lodge with the children playing just outside can be.
Let Grandparents Enjoy Quality Time - Without You
Don’t be offended - they may well have welcomed the chance to reconnect with their treasured offspring. But the real reason your mum and dad accepted your kind invitation to come to Bluestone is so they can get their hands on your pocket-sized wrecking machines alone for at least a day.
Make it easy - a morning at the Blue Lagoon gives plenty of waterpark action for the children to entertain themselves with whatever their age, while grandparents supervise in the water or relax poolside. They can take them to the Blue Lagoon Cafe after for food - with sandwiches, jacket potatoes, fries and a range of tasty snacks and ice creams. What will you do in the meantime?
You could do far worse than a trip to the Well Spa while the kids are being thoroughly tired out. Recently named Wales' Spa of the Year, our therapists at The Well Spa are highly trained, so talk to them about how you’re feeling and let them recommend treatments or therapies to bring you back to optimum health. Then you’ll be refreshed and ready for more free range fun.
Reconnect With Nature
Worried the kids of today will never share your memories of days making dens in the woods and splashing through streams? Make those memories together at Bluestone. Amble along our Nature Trail and count bugs rather than scores on a computer screen. In the midst of our rambling Pembrokeshire woodland time seems to stand still - and all three generations can indulge in some free range fun.
You can also team the children up with our Rangers for our Nature Detectives activity. They’ll explore the areas surrounding our woodland den on this fund activities led by our Ranger you’ll track down all types of creatures, bringing them back to the den. Check out our Mini Rangers page for more details.
Plan A Beach Day
It’s a day out as old as time - bringing the whole clan down to the beach. You’re not far from golden sands at Bluestone and a short drive will take you to some of the best beaches in Britain.
Here’s our guide to the recently announced Blue Flag beaches in Pembrokeshire, which have the highest standards of cleanliness and excellent facilities and check out our guide to family friendly beaches for more detail on where to visit and what to except. We’ve also compiled a look at the best places to go rock pooling and how to prepare the family for a day of catching crabs and spotting sea snails.
Do Your Own Thing
Chances are your grandparents might appreciate a little down time at Ty Coffi or simply set outside the lodge admiring the views - so take that as a cue to do something a little more fast paced. For children aged 8 or over, that might be the high ropes course in the Steep Ravine or a flight down the zip wire.
Feast In The Woods
In our humble opinion, no Bluestone stay is complete without a jaunt to Camp Smokey - our rustic woodland diner where you can get all three generations around the fire while the food crackles away. Let the grandparents teach the kids how to toast a marshmallow for the first time while you sup on a relaxing drink among the pines.
The children meanwhile, will pan for gold while Smokey Joe leads the search with some song singing, foot stomping fun before the Camp Smokey shindig after gets everyone up jigging and foot stomping. It won’t be just the freshly grilled Pembrokeshire produce and wild dancing that warms you.
Hit The Pub
If you get one of the glorious summer days we’ve had recently, nothing beats sat outside the Knights Tafarn while the children clamber around the the Treetops adventure playground, complete with a new Treetots area just for the very young.
You’ll find it in the Village, where there’s also easy access to shops, the bakery, booking office and restaurants - plus everything you could possibly need during your stay.
