Unforgettable Experiences For Your Family Bucket List

Want to make sure you have a break to remember? We’ve pulled together a quick family bucket list for your break - a collection of ideas we should all be doing with our families. It’s been done with one rule only - nothing boring allowed!

"Bluestone swaps little words like ‘boring’ and ‘lazy’ with great big ones like ‘wide’ and ‘open’" - The Bluestone Manifesto

In the spirit of our manifesto (which you can read all about HERE) here are a few ideas for you and your family in 2023.

Discover Secret Places Together

There are more nooks, crannies, and hidden away spots in Pembrokeshire than you can shake a stick at, so embrace your inner explorer and take the kids on an adventure to a secret spot.

Start with our secret beaches guide - there’s a never-ending multitude of coves and sandy, secluded bays that are just waiting to be found. Head a little bit off the beaten track and you’ll be spoilt for choice, so long as you’re willing to walk a while with your picnic.

Do Something That Scares You

Make a pledge to do something as a family that puts you outside your comfort zone. It might be as simple as taking teenagers on a zip wire (like our Sky Wire) for the first time or as nerve-wracking as going coasteering together. Don’t think of coasteering as something strictly for adults - if you’re eight or over and can doggy paddle you can take part in one of the family adventures run by most operators.

Explore The Beauty On Our Doorstep

You don’t have to travel halfway around the world to be awestruck - there’s an endless list of beauty spots waiting to be discovered on our shores. In Wales we’re particularly blessed - stand open-mouthed in beautiful St David’s Cathedral, feel serene at Bosherton Lily Ponds or sail out to historic Caldey Island.

Conquer a Castle

People travel from all over the world to visit our castles - there are more than 600 in Wales alone. Have you ever seen your children play in the ruins of an ancient castle? Make them kings and queens for a day and visit one of Pembrokeshire’s finest - from grand, wonderfully preserved structures like Carew Castle to domineering fortresses such as Pembroke Castle.

Feel on Top of the World

Wouldn’t it be great to say you’ve climbed a mountain? It might not be as hard as you think. The famous lofty peak of Snowdon is easily accessible and Wales is literally scattered with panoramic views should you not wish to schlep all the way up one. The Preseli Hills are a bit more forgiving though still rise to 536m in the northern half of the Pembrokeshire range. They’re dotted with a few hamlets and villages but are mostly remote, wide-open moorland with an otherworldly feel. Try the short walk to Foel Eryr where the 360-degree panorama leads the eye across the sea to Ireland and Snowdonia on a clear day.

Learn Something New in the Great Outdoors

Surfing, kayaking, axe throwing, archery - make 2023 the year to learn outdoors. Our activities team will help organise you so you can go home and say ‘I can now confidently throw an axe at a target should I ever need to’.

Experience Wildlife

The benefits of getting children immersed in nature and all the creepy-crawlies that come with it are well documented. Becoming Bluestone Nature Detectives at our Ranger HQ is a great place for the little ones to start - they’ll learn all about the minibeasts they find while searching the woods. Wales’s rugged coastline is just waiting to be explored and is buzzing with wildlife, whether it’s the red kites, falcons, and puffins out of the water or the basking sharks, dolphins, and orcas in it. Try a boat trip to Skomer Island to see its booming puffin population.

Experience it all at Bluestone

There's no better basecamp for a family getaway than right here at Bluestone. Kick off a year of adventure with a family break at our Winter Lights Festival!
